When it comes to intermittent fasting a question I often get asked is, does it work?
In a single word, Yes. Intermittent fasting is a tool and like a hammer it works. Now that we’ve cleared that out of the way. The more important question is.. For what will you be using intermittent fasting ?
For most of us, we ask this question concerning weight loss and rest assured the answer is still yes. How does intermittent fasting help with weight loss? Well it does so in many ways. The simplest of ways is that it most often reduces the amount of food we eat.
Don’t worry it gets more exciting than that. Intermittent fasting also induces hormonal changes that regulate our appetite and satiety. Geeky, huh? It's nice having science on our side.
However the most meaningful and lasting way (in my opinion) intermittent fasting works is the way it will change your relationship to food and hunger. Most of us eat when we feel hungry. That’s simple and easy. The problem? We may be hungry ALL of the time. And in my own case, I was also overweight.
Many of us have probably heard the advice “eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.” A great truism! Which practically means…. Absolutely nothing.
Intermittent fasting can help clarify what you’re feeling: Is it a craving? Is it hunger? Is it starvation? (no it isn't). And it’ll help clarify why you’re eating:
Are you eating out of habit? Because of a craving? Because you need fuel? Because you’re bored, thirsty or stressed?
And once we have clarity with why we’re eating and what we’re feeling when it comes to food, a big weight will be lifted… ;) So back to what we were talking about earlier.
